DETROIT, MI — History has been put on hold in Motor City.
On Friday night, the Detroit Tigers' game against the Colorado Rockies was rained off, putting Miguel Cabrera's quest for his 3,000th hit on hold for at least another day.
The game at Comerica Park was called about an hour before it was supposed to start. Cabrera now has 2,999 career hits, which he surpassed with a three-hit game on Wednesday.
Cabrera admitted that the accomplishment means a lot to him and that just thinking about it this week has made him cry.
"I had been dreaming about this moment," he said. "Wow!" I thought as soon as I got in the dugout.
The Rockies and Tigers will play a split doubleheader on Saturday to make up for the rainout. At 1:10 p.m. and 6:40 p.m., respectively, the games will begin.
Detroit will start right-hander Tarik Skubal (0-1, 3.72) against Colorado right-hander Antonio Senzatela in the first game of the doubleheader (0-1, 2.16).
The Tigers shifted right-hander Beau Brieske's major league debut from Saturday afternoon to Saturday evening, pitting him against left-hander Austin Gomber (0-1, 7.00).
Due to mild rain, the series-opening was postponed, with further rain anticipated for the rest of the night. The weather forecast for Saturday called for sunny skies and 81 degrees.
As a result of Cabrera's intentional walk in the eighth inning on Thursday, the Tigers won 3-0 over the New York Yankees.
Cabrera, 39, is one hit away from being the 33rd player insignificant league history and the first Venezuelan to do it.
He's also one hit away from being baseball's seventh player to hit 500 home runs and 3,000 hits. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Rafael Palmeiro, Albert Pujols, and Alex Rodriguez are elite members.
Cabrera will join Aaron and Mays as the only players in baseball history with a batting average of.300 or better.
"That makes it even more special," Hall of Famer and former Tiger shortstop Alan Trammell said.
"He recognizes he's coming close to the end," the narrator continues, "but there's still some gas in the tank." Overall, I think he'll have a great year."
Cabrera earned the AL MVP honor for the second year by leading the league in home runs, RBIs, and batting average. He was also named the league's top player for the second time.
