The NFC Championship
The next week, Fox will officially introduce Kevin Burkhardt as their new No. 1 NFL play-by-play announcer. The biggest games will be his focus. The NFC Championship will be in his hands. He will announce two of the following three Super Bowls.
Potentially, he'll end up as a pin cushion on social media. He is aware that that is par for the course.
Burkhardt told Deadspin's Jon Hoefling
No matter what I do, someone will always be bitter, Burkhardt told Deadspin's Jon Hoefling. "I don't give a fuck if they don't like me. It cannot influence how I perform my duties.
That mindset is appropriate. If he wants to remain in that position, it is the only attitude he can have.
Joe Buck
Burkhardt asserted, "I believe that everyone is upset about everything. "Joe Buck is among the best to have ever done it, so I never understood the internet criticism he received. It's a subjective industry, after all. I'm not gullible. I am aware that some individuals dislike my mannerisms or perhaps the way I announce a game. It's all right. You can only hope that you play the game fairly and have fun.
Media megaphone in today's environment
Anyone and everyone can use a social media megaphone in today's environment. One of the greatest to ever do it, Howard Cosell, would have faced constant trolling on social media. It would have been fascinating to learn how he would have responded. He undoubtedly would have, after all. Burkhardt has taken this proactive step.
Look, you want to be liked, don't you? said Burkhardt. "That's the aim, but if Twitter trolls are going to berate me, then it's like, 'You try being on TV unfiltered for three and a half hours live.'" No delete button is present. I don't enter a hospital and offer advice to a heart surgeon on how to perform his procedure to everyone who claims they could do it better. Probabilities are they can't do it much better.
Few trolls even attempt to suggest they could perform it more effectively. They continue to criticize the perpetrator despite this. They want things done by someone else so they can criticize the next person.
Burkhardt will start hearing about it starting next week. He should be pleased about that, in a way. Only those with little to no relevance have few internet adversaries in today's world.
