The options were limited to releasing him (absorbing the hit on his $2 million salary cap) or keeping him on the roster. Reports indicate the new deal would be for $6.5 million fully guaranteed, with another potential $9.5 million in bonuses.
Throughout the offseason, it was rumoured that several teams would be interested in Jimmy G, particularly the Seattle Seahawks. With the departure of Russell Wilson, we were left with a hole in the position they will try to fill with Drew Lock and Geno Smith to start reconstruction. However, Bleacher Report notes that Pete Carroll's team decided to wait until next year when Garoppolo is released.
In five seasons with the 49ers, Garoppolo completed 67.7% of his passes, throwing for 11,162 yards, 66 touchdown passes, and 38 interceptions in 46 games (45 starts). With this performance, Jimmy G signed a five-year, $137.5 million deal in 2018, when he thought he would be the team's long-term solution.
