In the Rocket Mortgage Classic's first round on Thursday, Luke Donald posted a decent 2-under 70, but the conversation that followed his round had little to do with his golfing ability.
After finishing his round at Detroit Golf Club, Donald spoke with Golfweek about a Telegraph report that claimed he would be chosen to succeed Henrik Stenson as captain of the European team for the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Stenson's captaincy was removed due to his choice to participate in the Saudi-sponsored LIV Golf Invitational Series.
Nothing is official yet, according to Donald, but he believes he has a "solid chance" of leading Europe at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome next fall.
Some opinions on Stenson's decision to accept the post in March even though he knew he couldn't be a member of LIV Golf and captain the team simultaneously.
I hate to talk about speculations, but stories are that he'd been in communication with the other tours, whatever they were. Donald added that he was pretty interested, so I was astonished at his decision to attend LIV. "And I believe that was widely known.
The tour of Europe was aware of that. They believed him when he said he wouldn't. Everybody has to agree to a clause or contract that states they won't participate in (LIV).
"I'm sad that he put his name forward and then chose LIV. I see why confident guys might go to LIV in particular circumstances related to their careers and other things; it makes sense. Something significant to give up
Donald added that he had been asked by LIV to join their broadcast crew but had politely declined.
Nick Faldo was the last Englishman to lead the European team in the Ryder Cup, which the United States won 16.5 to 11.5 in 2008 at Valhalla on home turf. It was the only European Ryder Cup squad from 2004 to 2012 on which Donald didn't play.
Donald was informed that an official announcement would be made early the next week and assured everyone that, should he be selected, his status as captain wouldn't be used to secure another offer.
He vowed that if I were given this captaincy, "I would keep my oath and see it through." I'll put it this way. I wouldn't perform a Henrik.
