The PointsBet Sportsbook has Josef Newgarden as the favourite for the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix on Sunday in Nashville, Tennessee.
Newgarden has demonstrated a high degree of consistency on this track type, which explains his +425 odds, with a victory at Long Beach this season and top-10 finishes in all but one of the nine street courses over the previous two years. In addition to his success in 2021, the Team Penske driver finished second in St. Petersburg, Belle Isle, and Long Beach. On his home track, Newgarden aims to close the 32-point gap between himself and Will Power.
American Odds can be seen by moving two places to the left decimal point. This week's return on investment for Newgarden is $4.25, letting a bettor know how much they will win on a $1 wager. For gamblers more accustomed to fractional odds, a chance of +300 is equivalent to 3/1.
Pato O'Ward is only marginally favoured over Newgarden at +440, despite the driver's unpredictable street track results over the previous two seasons. Over that time, O'Ward has one victory and four top-five finishes on temporary road courses, with his most recent solid performance coming in sixth at Belle Isle. His last nine street course starts had five non-top-10 finishes.
Colton Herta, who has a line of +520, is ranked third. In 2021, he won two street course races in St. Pete and Long Beach. Despite not adding a second street triumph in 2022, he came close with a second-place showing in Toronto and has three top-10 finishes in four attempts on the track type this year.
At +540, Herta barely defeats Power as the point leader. In the first three street races of this season, Power finished first, second, and third and won at Belle Isle. He dropped to 15th at Toronto but returned to take third last week on the indoor permanent road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Alex Palou, with a line of +800, completes the top five. In his last 11 outings on the combined road and street tracks, Palou has eight sixth-place or better finishes, including a victory at Portland International Raceway in 2017.
Scott Dixon, Marcus Ericsson, and Alexander Rossi, the winners of last week's race, are each set at +850 at PointsBet, a line more than twice as high as Newgarden's.
