Tennessee's NASHVILLE With his victory in the chaotic Music City Grand Prix on Sunday, Scott Dixon overtook Mario Andretti for second place among the all-time IndyCar winners. They moved closer to a record-tying seventh series title.

In a two-lap charge to the finish line, Dixon overcame a bad qualifying performance, damage to his Chip Ganassi Racing vehicle, a crash-fest through Nashville's downtown streets, and ultimately a drag battle with Scott McLaughlin. He broke a tie with Andretti for second place all-time by winning for the 53rd time in his career.

Dixon moved up to second place in the standings and is now behind series leader Will Power by, with three races remaining, six points. He would have a record seven titles if he won one more championship, matching A.J. Foyt.

With 67 wins, Foyt also holds the record for most IndyCar victories.

After receiving a penalty for repairs to his No. 9 Dallara-Honda, which was involved in a Turn 7 pileup, Dixon dropped to last on Lap 29.

For Team Penske, McLaughlin came in second, giving the New Zealand-born drivers a 1-2 result.

The victory margin of 0.1067 seconds was the fourth-closest finish on a road or street race in IndyCar history.

IndyCar champion Alex Palou came in third as Ganassi had two drivers finish on the podium.

As 33 points separate the contenders for the championship, Palou climbed one position to fifth in the rankings. Chip Ganassi, the team owner, paused on his way to victory lane to congratulate Palou, the driver he is suing for attempting to quit the team at the end of the season.

In the end, Andretti Autosport's Alexander Rossi and Colton Herta finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while hometown hero Josef Newgarden classified sixth.

The Newgarden had a difficult period after colliding at Iowa three races ago while in the lead. Before the incident, he had the most points. He then slumped and banged his head and had to complete a battery of medical tests before being permitted to race last weekend in Indianapolis.

He reduced his duties in Nashville before the race so that he could be rested and focus on racing. Even though he had taken the lead in the race's closing stages, Newgarden had to stop for fuel. He later touched with Romain Grosjean, who was enraged with Newgarden for the incident.
