Brazil's Recife (A.P.) — USA Basketball won't win the AmeriCup tournament again.
Argentina defeated the United States 82-73 in Saturday's semifinal game thanks to 30 points from Gabriel Deck and 18 points from Nicolás Laprovittola.
It was a replay of the U.S. winning the gold medal game from the previous AmeriCup competition in 2017.
Not this time, not after Argentina defeated the Americans, a group of players who had previously played in the G League or for teams with foreign bases, 17-7 in the final 4:59.
A lot of credit must go to Argentina and (coach Pablo Prigioni). "They did a tremendous job in the end. It's a solid team, a veteran squad, with plenty of talented players and varied weapons," U.S. coach Alex Jensen said. We achieved our goals. We quickly ran out of patience as they successfully turned the intensity up a notch.
Later on Saturday, Brazil defeated Canada 86-76 in the other semifinal. Canada faces the United States earlier on Sunday for bronze, while Brazil will face Argentina for the gold on Sunday.
With 5:12 remaining, Norris Cole's basket gave the Americans a 66-65 lead, but that would be their final advantage.
Cole scored 18 points to lead the Americans, and Zylan Cheatham contributed ten more. The Americans only attempted ten free throws, compared to 29 for Argentina.
Argentina fell to the United States 81-76 in the 2017 AmeriCup final, with Facundo Campazzo scoring 10 points. For 33 of the game's 40 minutes, Argentina held the lead.
