Defending champion and top-ranked Daniil Medvedev was unbothered by frustrating rain delays at the National Bank Open.
It is one of the advantages of his superior ranking in men's singles. Medvedev received a bye in the first round as the top seed and probably won't play his first match until Wednesday.
"Medvedev said I feel fine physically, and I am mentally ready," Los Cabos, I am thrilled with the title.
"So it doesn't matter who I play...whether it's going to be a qualifier or a wild card, lucky loser, second seed, I just want to win the match."
Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori defeated Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a match four hours after Monday's originally scheduled start time.
In other opening matches, American Jenson Brooksby beat Kazakh Alexander Bublik 6-2, 6-3, and Russian Karen Khachanov beat Argen6(1), 6-4.
The rain returned later on Monday and forced the suspension of all afternoon games.
Australian Alex de Minaur led 7-5, 6-6 over Canadian Denis Shapovalov when the rain started. They had shared the first six points of the tiebreaker.
His first match until Wednesday. Pospisil was scheduled to play his first doubles game with Sinner on Monday but was rescheduled.
