Trey Lance had to wait to take over as the starting quarterback for the 49ers. To become the squad captain, he will have to wait.
The following players have been named as the 49ers' captains for 2022: defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive end Nick Bosa, tight end George Kittle, safety Jimmie Ward, linebacker Fred Warner, and tackle Trent Williams. According to coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers had seven captains each of the previous two seasons, and Lance came in seventh in the poll.
It is unusual for a quarterback not to serve as the team's captain, and this season, neither the Seahawks nor the Browns have elected a quarterback to that position.
Shanahan justified Lance's absence because he made his debut as a full-time starter.

According to Lance, who was quoted by Doug Farrar of USA Today on Wednesday, "Obviously, that's a goal of mine, but I don't believe you can look at any six of those players and be like, 'That guy's a bozo,' because those guys have played football at a very, very high level. "So, yes, the circumstances vary. I believe all those men deserve it because I voted for them. But yes, moving forward, that is undoubtedly a goal of mine. However, all of those players have done so, which is what this league is about.
