Jason Peters
Jason Peters, a free agent left tackle, has been in talks with the Cowboys about joining the squad to help cover for Tyron Smith's absence due to a knee injury. Still, a deal wouldn't likely prevent first-round choice, Tyler Smith from starting against the Buccaneers in Week 1.
Left guard position
Before switching positions, the rookie was vying for the left guard position. One of his greatest responsibilities in his new position will be guarding quarterback Dak Prescott, who can relate to Smith unexpectedly earning a spot in the starting lineup. After being selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Prescott was Dallas' No. 3 quarterback. However, after Kellen Moore got hurt, he was forced to start as the backup, and when Tony Romo hurt his back, he took over as the starter.
Since then, Prescott has maintained his position and retained the lucrative deal that comes with excelling at the position. Although it is impossible to predict whether Smith will have a similar experience, Prescott thinks the rookie will be fit to play on Sunday.
"When Tyler is around, you can see the warrior and the competitor. You can see the grit of the football player," Prescott stated on the team's website. "I expect him to be prepared. Six years ago, I was in his shoes. If anyone supports the next man up and subscribes to that philosophy, it's me. I'm here to encourage him and provide him with the necessary confidence.
The Cowboys will have an experienced insurance policy if Peters signs and Week 1 will show if they'll need to use it if they do.
