UEFA Nations League's third edition kicked off in June 2022, with the final tournament planned for the same month a year later.
As in the 2020/21 edition, the 2022/23 competition consists of three leagues of 16 teams each and a fourth of seven, whose composition will be decided by the promotions and relegations of that second phase. With the groups defined by the draw held on December 16 in Nyon, here's how it all works.
Leagues A, B and C have 16 teams, divided into four groups for the league phase. The other seven teams in League D were divided into two groups, one of four and the other of three. In all cases, the teams will play against all their group rivals away in June and Sep 2022. Four of the six-match days will be in June due to the winter programming of the 2022 World Cup.
The top four of the League A groups will advance to the final knockout stage next June 2023. The group winners' other three leagues will be promoted for the edition in 2024/25.
The fourth teams in the groups of Leagues A and B will be relegated. The teams that place fourth in the League C groups will enter the qualifiers in March 2024, where the two teams defeated in those qualifiers will advance to League D.
The top four teams from the League A groups will participate, and, in principle, one of them will be the host. The semifinals will be played on June 14 and 15, 2023 and the final and the match for third place on June 18.
